Writing a Successful E-newsletter

Introducing a new series by Michelle Finerty:

Staying in Touch with Customers Using Emails and E-newsletters

Part 1—Writing a Successful E-newsletter

In our fast paced technological world, reaching out to your customers is a constantly changing process due to the wide variety of options available.

As an independent contractor  growing my own small business, I’ve learned that e-newsletters  are a wonderful way to keep in touch with clients, and here are some tidbits I’ve learned along the way.

Make a strong first impression. People get inundated with emails and sift through them quickly to clean out their inbox. Make sure your company name is easily recognizable in the sender field, give your newsletter a catchy name to attract attention, and choose eye-catching colors for your background.

Keep the subject short, concise, and relevant to your business. A newsletter should have a point and back it up in 75-150 words, as people tend to skim their emails and lose attention if the subject matter is too long and detailed.

Add a discount, promotion, or provide links for customers to get more information about the services you offer. By providing them with an incentive to utilize your services, recruit friends and family, and get something for themselves you are creating a loyal customer base. People love being in the loop!

Last, but not least, personalize your closing. Make sure they remember your name by ending with a heartfelt closing.
